Design

Guessing game - which phone is iPhone?

The Design of the i9000 almost identical to the iPhone except the two touch sensitive button which light up. If it weren’t for the flash on my camera, you wouldn’t have seen those two that easily in this picture.

Pssst –  i think they purposely omitted the flash so that it would be more identical to an iPhone in terms of design

User Interface

Both phones run different Operating systems. I9000 runs a cutomized version of googles android and the iPhone runs iOS4.

but the more i use the Galaxy, the more i think they try to copy the iPhone UI in almost every way. Let me show you

If the iPhone wallpaper was black, how much similar would it be?

Here is what i think the i9000 has taken out of the iPhone UI

• The dock that doesn’t change when you move from one screen to another
• Apples notification alert (you can see it on the top right corner of the “samsung apps” icon -

• The icons are more “square” as well instead of the usual android icons on the google nexus one or HTC Androids. Probably to make it look more like the iPhone

More things i noticed

Usually android phones have cover-flow in their music player itself. (google for images) but in the galaxy the music player interface is like of the iPods and guess what happens when you turn it by 90 Degrees?

Atleast they decided to a small change in it, which is welcome.

Finally…  i wasn’t too impressed with this one.

How did samsung go about removing applications? Like other androids? Settings ->Applications? Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Conclusion

Above i mentioned somewhere that the i9000 runs a customized version of  Android. Change that to an “iPhone-ized” version of android. Too many things look similar and are obviously taken from the iPhone. and this is another reason why i support HTC because what they do is usually original and not an imitation of another leading product. (HTC already have faced a patent lawsuit from apple for including multi-touch to their First android phone  so they really wouldn’t dare make anything similar)

Although i’m not an apple fan-boy, i still should say this out. Firms should be more original when they are making a product and not copy directly from their rivals. A good example would be HTC, who i also love for their originality much like apple.

Don’t get me wrong, The Galaxy S is an awesome phone. It’s just funny how it looks like an iphone clone. Otherwise samsung, you’ve got my vote on the phone. Well done!

HTC Desire vs Samsung i9000 Galaxy S

Build Quality

Both phones have a solid feel when held in your hand but personally I think the Desire feels better in your hand thanks to the special material it’s made out of, a some-what soft plastic that is scratch proof, the Galaxy is made out of plastic which is a bit depressing as this is Samsungs top smart phone and yet they decide to sacrifice on materials?

Despite that small issue, both phones have a solid feel and good build quality

Screen

Both phones run the fully touch oriented Android OS with their own UI on top of it. So the screen is a very important aspect of a touch phone. The Galaxy S features the newest technology in screens, The “Super Amoled” screen which is 4″ diagonally and the Desire has a Standard “Amoled” screen which is 3.7″. The differences is quite noticeable because the Super Amoled screen does make the colours look more vibrant and has a better contrast level compared to the Amoled, although the Desire has slightly more pixel density because they both have the exact same resolution but the Samsung has to share it over a larger screen. what this means is that when you zoom into something they would become more blurrier. Both screens react very fast to touch as well which is very nice.

But overall in terms of screen preference, I’ll have to go with the Galaxy. The Super amoled does make things look  brighter, More Vibrant and colourful that it’s older sibling the Amoled.

User Interface

Both phones run the Eclair (a version of android) but the Desire gets Froyo this weekend whilst the Samsung is  in September. Both manufacturers have their own UI on top of android.

So far samsungs touch-wiz doesn’t really appeal to me because the widgets seem a little too lightweight compared to the Desire and it’s even less in numbers. At a first glance it seems like the Galaxy has more options

Well, turns out that the samsung widgets are very light weight and you don’t get a massive selection of Android Widgets either

Android widgets are much better than the Samsung widgets you get. but that's all you get on the i9000 at the moment. HTC sense offers way more and there are more available to be downloaded, unlike in the Galaxy.

This almost makes me wonder why Samsung gives you 7 pages to fill up with widgets. Hopefully there’ll be more to download in the future (all though there is no option to check for new ones either :s)

In terms of UI,  it really easy to prefer HTC sense over Touch-wiz

Applications

Applications are expected as standard in today’s smart phones. Luckyly both phones run android which means they do have access to the fastest growing app market, though a bit fragmented because of the sheer different number of mobile phones that run the same OS.

For some reason the Galaxy doesn’t seem to work so well with the Market place.

For some reasons the “Top Paid” menu doesn’t appear on the Galaxy. not really sure why but hopefully this too will go away soon and it can be like the desire market. Oh, did i mention that samsung has it’s own market too? yeh it does, while it’s not as good and have only a coupl eof applications at extreme rip off prices that is another way to get applications for the galaxy, trust me though – you won’t want to. The Desire currently has an edge when it comes to apps

Social Networking

The HTC Sense UI probably has the best social network integration at the moment.

• Complete phone book integration with Facebook, Twitter and Flickr
• Friend Stream supports Twitter and Facebook feeds in one window
• Ability to link phone contacts with their online profile
• “Foot Prints” Geo – tagging ( it’s social networking too right?)

The samsung is trying to do somethign similar with it’s “Social Hub” but like most things with the phone it feels a bit premature with not much support (yet!)

PC Sync

Both phones have their own pc syncing software (for Windows only)

Samsung with it’s “Kies”

Don't really understand the name but w/e

Kies is the best Samsung has done when it comes to PC Suite, their previous suites were horrible from my experience, and this one is semi- decent. Gets the job done. Although is no where near as good as iTunes (why did i just say that anyway?)

The Photo viewer and Music player don’t recognize the content on the phone but i think this program is still in it’s early stages. The contacts manager and messaging manager works fine.

HTC with their “HTC Sync”

Nice and Simple. a bit light weight but effective

HTC Sync is simple and at the moment offers the same functionality as Kies because Kies isn’t fully functional yet.

If i had to choose one of the two suites, i’d probably go with Kies as it has the potential to do more than Sync and does things in style. (some people might prefer the simpler HTC Sync)

A final observation i should mention is that the i9000 is glitchy at times and this is because samsung is a bit backward when it comes to software. I’ve noticed this in a couple of samsung phones i’ve used (Tocco, S800 JET, Omnia HD) so i wasn’t expection much better on this phone either, although this phone was above my expectation of their standards (probably because they used Googles software) but it’s still a bit buggy or laggy at times, but that isn’t enough to completely turn this phone away.

Conclusion

I’m going to be honest, Choosing one of the two is quite a hard choice. Both of them excel at different areas. The Samsung has a better screen and performs a bit faster due to the light weight Touch-wiz UI where as the Desire has a more complete UI and access to more of the app store and a better social network integration. The choice is yours really, If i could have any smart phone available in todays market i wanted, i’d go with the iPhone 4 Despite it’s antenna problem – i’m right handed

But if you don’t want to spend that much on a phone ( free on £60 per month for a 16gb version) or an Apple hater (which many of you are) then you have these two – more value for money options. The Desire is the cheapest free on a £25 per month contract and Galaxy Free on a £35 per month contract. Personally i don’t see why the galaxy is more expensive, having said that the Desire is a couple of months older and phone values do decline.

So if you want to choose here is what you need to think of

If you don’t mind a few software glitches and want the phone to show off it’s screen or blast of tunes using the loud speaker then the galaxy is your best pick because the super amoled screen and louder speaker might cater for your needs. The camera is also slightly better than the Desire

If you’re like me and need the phone for more social use rather than showing off and want it to be polished and smooth rather than a bit premature and glitchy then Desire is a no-brainer. The UI feels polished and smooth with loads of social widgets available. The screen and music are very good as well. If you can spend a bit more cash and don’t mind waiting for a while then you might even want to check this phone on steroids. The HTC EVO 4G, Still not available in the UK.

Smart Phones

Before the interdiction of the iOS, all smart phones were based on either Symbian, Windows Mobile or Blackberry’s RIM. All three of them used to be stereotyped as a business man’s phone and weren’t generally favoured by an Average user thanks to the extra-horrible and clunky interfaces that had to be navigated by the trackpad or a joystick in some cases. and these mobiles also used to be chunky with not-so-aesthetically pleasing looks but they did however offer features that other mobile OS’s could only dream of. Mainly eMail clients which businessmen’s lives depended upon.

If you compare them to what we call “smart phones” nowadays, it is fair to say Apple was a godsend to the mobile phone industry. If it weren’t for them, we’d still probably be using one of them phone if we need a smart phone or not have a smart phone. Although they did kick start the new generation of smart phones, they do have some serious competition now. Their main rivals being Google with it’s Android mobile OS and Blackberry with their RIM, and joining in with the time is Microsoft using their very successful Windows 7 idea to make a mobile OS which they claim is easy and fun to use as Windows 7.

Although all of these OS’s are taking their base idea from Apple itself we can’t really call this “Stealing” because that’s just the way all industries work, but Credit to apple for the numerous inventions they added to the phone and.. this can only improve competition and eventually benefit the user.

iOS

The re-invention of the mobile phone, the dawn of the smart phone era. The iPhone came out with numerous innovations that every other mobile company just couldn’t think of. This mobile is definitely aimed at the teen market (like most apple products) but did catch everyone’s attention because of it’s ease of use and usability it offered. and who can say no to a good app store? To be fair, i do think the iOS is the most elegant and easiest to use mobile OS at the moment although android is very very close. The iPhone itself changed the smart phone platform by the number of innovations they made

• Touch oriented operating system
• First ever capacitive display
• First ever multi touch display
• Slide to unlock (copied by almost everyone else) as opposed to the usual @hold to unlock’
• Dedicated physical mute toggle switch
• Centralised app store
• First ever fully featured mobile browser
• first to have Threaded messaging (Messages look like a conversation)
• Ability to purchase music straight through your phone

Although Apple does control the user experience a LOT by not giving as much freedom as say.. Android, they do make sure that what ever feature they give on the phone works the best it can – and if it’s not a 100% complete, you just don’t get it on your phone. You might when it’s finally “perfected” by Apple themselves.

Examples we know of are

1. Multi-Tasking for 3rd party apps – Because Steve thought that if it’s not done properly the battery will suffer
2. Video calling – We all know it’s very glitchy over a 3G connection and no body uses it, so Steve’s philosophy is “if you want someone to use something, it has to be usable”. So he made it available via Wifi only (just so that we can’t have glitchy video conversations)

Yes i know, you can say other phones do these features acceptably but i do like the way apple cares about their products at this level. and using an iPhone as we all know is a pleasant experience. i don’t think anyone who has bought one hates it or regrets is.

Even if you are an Apple hater reading this (i’m not a fanboy btw) you must give credit to apple for inventing all these which we can now enjoy on other handsets as well.

Android

Android is Google’s answer to the iOS. and the best thing about Android is that it’s open source, which mean any manufacturer can take it – Tweak it – and use it on any device they want. Although this gives the user a variety of choices to go with it also means that the Android App Store (Market) is going to be fragmented with applications made for specific devices, which might not work on others. Otherwise the Android does give the user a lot of freedom with their devices, something which iPhone users aren’t given. You can tweak android to your liking and make it just right for you. Also the open source means developers can add their own technology onto devices hence giving you more choice over your phone (such as HTC Sense or Touchwiz). From what i can see, Android is the fastest Evolving OS and the fastest growing App store as well. With most apps being free. The way i see it, it’s just as user friendly as an iPhone (it’s the iphone but you can add widgets on your screens – User interface-wise)

i like sense better but it’s a matter of preference.

RIM

I am no expert on blackberries. I’ve used a few although never owned one, To be frank, i’m not a big Fan of them. Personally i think that blackberries are over hyped. The reasons i’m not a big fan is because of their clunky interfaces that need updating and the fact that it’s not very touch oriented (yet!) and App store is no where near as good as Android or iOS. Although BB OS 6 has been announced it still doesn’t convince me that it’s going to be a match for Either Android or iOS. Although, i still think that businessmen might prefer this to other smart phones because of their amazing email capabilities which is one of BBs main selling point, Other selling point is BBM (Blackberry Mobile) which many users tend to love. Personally i think that Android and iPhone have different application on the store that do the same job just as good but oh well. As we all can see, recently people have gone on a “BB Hype” and lots of teenagers are buying blackberries. Some love it and some hate it. Mostly the ones who buy it say they buy it because they want BBM. Personally i think they buy it just to get in with the trend, the more people buy it the more trendier it is to have one, but hey! don’t quote me on this. To date, to me – Blackberries are businessmens phones whose  lives depend on emails and it makes me wonder sometimes when i see a 14 year old carrying a blackberry, why o why would you need all those email capabilities? (i’m 18 btw) because in my generation or probably in my age group – email is not very popular, we all have it but rarely use it as a means of communication. There are other means such as Facebook, MSN or just texting so i don’t see what’s so good about a blackberry to someone of my age but if you see, then by all means buy one.

for some reason blackberry seems to think that dancing to Black eyed peas while checking your email is really cool. Either this is some kind of attempt to appeal more to the teenage market or does it just add some fun to your dull ass business life?

Symbian

The pioneer of the smart phone OS. Nokia made a hit with this OS when they first announced this very powerful mobile OS that took their N Series mobiles phones into the future and it was also adapted by other manufacturer such as samsung. Although this OS is dying now due to trendier competition we must give them credit for what they have done. They still are available on the N series Nokia’s but users would much rather have an Android or iPhone or even BB because of the trendiness and app support and ease of use. The recent announcement of and open source symbian called symbian^3 (trendy name?) might be the revivial that nokia desperately needs and after checking it out i must say they are catch up with the times.

i don’t have much information on windows mobile 7 yet because here in the UK it’s hard to find a device to try it out not so i can’t give you my opinion on it yet. but why not check this out? Credit to that youtuber and i’m just advertising his video.

As things stand now, if i had to go with a smart phone. It’d either be an iPhone or an Android based device such as Samsung i9000 or HTC Evo 4G, more likely Evo because samsung has been bad with their software in the past (at-least in the ones i bought from them S8000 Jet and i8910 Omnia HD – which were meant to be their pinnacle at the time)

i currently use the HTC Desire and that phone is very very good. It’s cheaper than the iPhone 3GS and runs android with HTC Sense. i know many other people who own one and all of them are very impressed so it’s highly Recommended.

The Apple Macintosh – Snow Leopard

Microsoft’s Windows – Windows 7

Linux – Ubuntu 10, Fedora 12, Linux Mint 9, Debian 5 etc etc

As you might notice – Linux comes in a variety of flavours each with their own speciality. Unlike different versions of windows which are all pretty much the same with added or subtracted features (Nice one Microsoft!). I am Currently using Windows 7, Snow Leopard and Ubuntu 10 (yes, I use all 3) and like all 3 of them, they are all good in their own ways. But what really grinds my gears are fan-boys. Especially the Apple ones. Or is it just that mac is a religion rather than an OS? You tell me.

The purpose of this post is to let new buyers or ones trying to switch an insight of what each is really like. To compare and contrast the benefits of each.

My Computers

Currently I own 2 computers.

A 4 year old Desktop meant to be running just XP (1.6Ghz Core 2, 2GB ram) but runs Windows 7 and ubuntu 10 just fine)

and a brand new Mac book pro (2.4 Ghz Core 2, 4gb Ram)

Windows 7

Lets be honest, Microsoft messed up with their Vista Operating system. It was a poorly designed resource hog, terribly in-efficient and an absolutely terrible to use because what ever you wanted to do, you had a pop-up asking you if you really wanted to do it (yes I did god-damn it!), nevertheless it did have some serious eye candy that would give nerds another excuse to stay indoor rather than go out and socialize. With the 3d Accelerated GUI and Vista Aero it was seriously impressing compared to it’s main Rival, Leopard – who opted simplicity and sophistication as their aesthetics instead. But the eye-candy did come with the cost of a terribly resource hungry beast. It did suck up about 60% of the ram in my 2GB machine after starting up, not running any other program. And when I started opening say.. Firefox, Media monkey (my juke box), Photo shop, office etc. etc. all at once – I could straight away see the CPU meter spiking up the ram usage. And when it was asked to perform too much over the limit (which seemed like a too-low limit to be honest), it did crash. So you needed about 4 GB of ram to run it pretty much. Greedy resource hog. And Vista is arguably the best gift apple could have ever received. In comparison, their light weight OS was much more efficient and didn’t hog as much resources hence not crashing. And this gave life to the apple philosophy “It just works”

After all that denying that Vista wasn’t a problem, it didn’t take Microsoft long to realised they’ve truly dug a hole for themselves this time. And many Windows users starting moving towards the Mac platform. This in away is the best thing that could have happened to a windows fan as well, because this did Kick Microsoft’s arse into gear, and you can see they’ve been hard at work. Windows 7 is just what vista should have been. But they didn’t bother too much with vista because the monopolist arrogance of Microsoft had somehow made them think their loyal fans would take anything from them.

I really like the new features on Windows 7. Especially The new task-bar works a lot like the dock in OSX but I don’t personally think it was a rip off. Because if you noticed windows has had “quick launch” since windows 95 and the Apple Dock is just a beefed up quick launch. And the new task-bar can be seen as a beefed up quick launch, And it is also superior to the dock because it can show multiple thumbnails of all open windows whilst the dock can’t.  Over all Windows 7 is also much less resource hungry and works efficiently as well. All these days I’ve used it (for like 8 months now) it hadn’t crashed a single time. But unfortunately Internet Explorer is still light years behind any other competition and windows media player needs to be less- clunky. So you do have to download your favourite browser (chrome in my case) and Jukebox (Media monkey is the best in my opinion, because it is as good as iTUnes in all aspects but much less resource hungry). But Otherwise we can clearly see the effort Microsoft had put into their new OS. And I assure you, if you have Vista or XP, you should seriously consider upgrading, because it is damn impressive.

Snow Leopard

The horribleness of vista gave rise to the Leopard operating system, because otherwise people wouldn’t have gone for a much more expensive alternative. Although Mac’s aren’t as over priced as people think. They are slightly over priced. But the main reason they are so expensive is because of the quality of the Computers. Windows laptops do have high quality computers such as the HP envy, or some of the Alien wares but they are more expensive than the Macs. Why people think windows alternatives are cheaper is because, with windows – you have the option of going for a lower budget one. Which probably won’t be as high quality material but will get the job done. Also Widows tend to be a little bit cheaper because of the massive amount of competition, whilst only apple is allowed to legally sell a computer with Mac OS on it.

I decided to give macs a go this time because I’ve been a windows user since my first computer (which was windows 98) and I wanted to give a different platform a chance. I’m also going to be doing physics next year at university and Unix based computers are preferred in that field of science. And hey! Apple does a good promotion discount for anyone going to university. 14% of the RRP + up to £130 off an iPod. Wanna complain? So it worked out cheaper for me to buy a mac than a windows based laptop.

But I have to say, this laptop just screams quality, The attention apple gives to it’s products are just amazing. You can just feel the quality of it. And under the hood Snow Leopard is very impressive. A little history on snow leopard – When Microsoft announced Windows 7, apple knew it was time for a new OS, but having ran out of ideas on GUI improvements – they claimed they “only wanted to build a better Leopard” instead of admitting they’ve run out of ideas to make a new OS. Many of the upgrades are actually “under the hood” and improved stability. Many people were thrilled when they saw that it was only £25 for an upgrade from leopard, but when they realised they’ve paid 25 Quid for a Prefix… I don’t think they were that impressed. Some noticeable additions are Dock Expose and the 6GB of space you get back. Surely this could have just been a free update? I got mine Pre-Installed so I’m not going to complain. But well.. yeah!

However I am going to complain about the lack of some very basic features windows users like me have taken for granted for years.

1. You can’t rename multiple files at once, apparently the only way to do it is by using some programme called “automater”, but really, why?!
2. You can’t ‘Put back’ (which is restore from the recycle bin for windows users) files deleted from multiple different locations. WTF?! Why Steve? Why?!
3. This might not be apples fault but most of the 3^rd party programs you get on the mac are ancient versions of the ones available on Windows. Skype for example because i use this a lot!. At-least there is a bit of nostalgia. And HTC sync isn’t available so I can’t sync my HTC desire to my mac!

But I do like the luxury of perfect software and hardware integration which not many windows users have. And I love the overall slickness. Windows 7 is comparatively a bit more clunky probably because of the heavy visual additions. But I’m getting used to the Mac-ness and I’m sure you’d find it a pretty reliable Operating system. But you can also see that windows is quietly getting there despite being quiet about it.

Oh oh, and it also works straight out of the box. You don’t have to go around downloading a browser or jukebox because on the mac, Safari and iTunes are as good as it gets and it’s pretty damn good to even think about getting an alternative. and you get  iPhoto (with face recognition technology) and iMovie and Garage band for free!…. Pwhoar!

Ubuntu 10.04

Welcome to the Socialist state. Ubuntu is an ethnic philosophy focusing on people’s allegiances and relations with each other. Sharing is caring is the motto here. It’s a surprisingly powerful, yet light weight operating system. Runs on any Mac or PC. OH! And did I mention it was Free?!

This operating system is not for the ‘n00bs’

It’s comparatively hardest to get accustomed to but the customisability and usability this offers surpasses windows and mac combined. Mac and Linux have a lot in common. The are both based on a Unix foundation which makes them both super stable. But macs are so tightly controlled by the ‘dicktator’ Steve and apple where as Ubuntu is as free as operating systems can get. You can do what ever you want with it and it will still “just work”, and lets not forget the free software you can download for it thorough the Ubuntu software centre (Did you know the worlds most favourite browser Firefox was made by these guys?). It’s plain amazing. Oh and erm.. you can even run most windows program by using either “wine” or “cedega”. These programmes let you run windows programmes on Linux but Cedega is a better choice but you have to pay $5 a month to use it. If you know how to use it, Linux is the best hands down, but it’s more like trying to to tame the wildest of beasts. Too damn hard for myself, good luck.

I love linux, I love their attitude, and the flavours they come in is just too damn good. Just wikipedia the number of flavours you can get linux on. Go on.. i’ll wait. Impressive right?

And ubuntu has it’s fair share of eye candy. Much better than windows or mac. I’m a linux newbie. But I’m going to learn it, step by step. You tube holds the answer to your Ubuntu eye candy questions. And what’s more impressive is – despite being free, they’ve managed to not fuck up once? I reckon the Soviet Union has links to this. “Sharing”? “For the people”? Deja Vu much?

Switching to a different Desktop.

Conclusion

If you followed me through, you’d notice that my view is pretty unbiased. I like them 3 equally. And in the end it all boils down to the users preference and what you are using it for.

• If you are a normal home user who wants something cheap that’ll just get your work done or some professional who gets an inflated pay check at the end of the month for crunching down Spreadsheets and needing a premium quality computer then the Range of Windows PC’s are for you, Sir.

• If you have a Heavy wallet and don’t mind spending money on a premium quality Computer or an Artist or a Science student or a die-hard apple fan who’ll buy anything with an apple logo on it you might want to consider a Mac and you can’t go wrong.

• If you know how to build your own computer and don’t mind a steep learning curve, or just want more out of your PC or…. plan on Global takeover (because Linux is run on military planes, helicopters and even satellites) Then Linux is for you.
